We had a terrific time on Monday during our
Halloween stations! We made owls, rattles to go the story Rattlebone Rock, played with goop, and made ghost windsocks.
A tremendous 'thank you' to all that helped our class today, whether it
be sending in goodies or coming in to help with our stations! Many of the
students LOVED playing with the goop! This is the recipe for it - it is very
easy! Place 1 cup of cornstarch in a bowl. Slowly stir in 1/2 to
3/4 cup water to make a thick liquid. Hold the goop in your hand and let
it run back into the bowl! Have fun! Enjoy looking at the pictures at the end of the blog showing all of the fun we had that day!
And now it is.............
It is had to believe that the children have been in Kindergarten that long already! We've done a lot and have so much more to do!
Math: In Math we have been exploring #'s to 10.
We have been making them in different combinations and by adding '1
more and 2 more' or '1 less or 2 less'. As you can see by the
time that we have been spending on this concept it is a hard one to grasp!
We have been using a manipulative called a 'ten frame' to practice our
#'s. We also continue to practice correct # formation.
Some of the children still need reminders to 'start at the top' when forming
them!
Language Arts/Writing: We continue to work on letter/sound
relationships and writing the correct letter for sound we hear
when we streeeeeeeeeeeeeetttttttttttchhhhhhhhhh our words! We have
continued concentrating on writing 'true' stories, either by
putting ourselves in the characters place from a story that we have read or
about an actual event that has happened in our own lives. This week we wrote about our Halloween adventures. When I say 'wrote' - that can
mean many things. Some children are drawing pictures and labeling them,
others are drawing and writing a few words, while still others may be writing
simple sentences. Everyone is at a different stage with this!
Social Studies/Science: This week we began discussing
the 5 senses. So far we have discussed sight and we constructed a diagram of the eye. We have
been reading different versions of The Little Red Hen,
a story which really incorporates the 5 senses very well. As we read each
story we compare and contrast it to the other Little Red Hen stories
that we have already read.
Other: Mrs. Palaygi, our school guidance counselor, came in today to continue her series of lessons on friendship.
She talked to the children about feelings and ways in which you can tell
how other people are feeling. She used her friends, the Mood Dudes, to
role play different feelings. She will continue to join us for several weeks during
this unit.
Conversation Starters:
- How did the goop feel? (slimy, hard, sticky, wet, silky, like glue because it stuck to the hands)
- What was your favorite Halloween station?
- What are the 5 senses? (seeing, hearing, tasting, touching, smell)
- What are some of the things that the Little Red Hen baked in the stories that we have read so far? (bread, cake)
- How can you tell how another person is feeling? (by listening to the tone of their voice, by their body language, and by the look on their face)
- Please label your child's outerwear. Thank you!
- Please practice zippering and tying with your child.
- Encourage your child to do the 5 senses paper that came home today and return it to school on Monday.
- Encourage your child to count different items in your home, pointing to each as they do so. Discuss what # comes before and after the # that they come up with.
Looking Ahead:
- Letters reviewed next week: Ll, Leo Lion; Ee, Ed Elephant
- Someone Special Reminder: Paige Brabender
- Friday, November 11 - No School - Veteran's Day
