We had a change in our classroom this week. Unfortunately, we had to say good-bye to Mrs. Tiu, our classroom aide. We then said hello to Mrs. Clark, our new classroom aide! We will miss Mrs. Tiu but are very lucky to now have Mrs. Clark help us each and every day!
Math: positional words, shapes,
ordinals, # recognition, continued on with reviewing the concepts and
vocabulary of 'greater/more and less/fewer', and problem solving activities
Language Arts: phonemic awareness
- # of beats in a word/'tapping out the beats', identifying beginning/ending
sounds of a word, review of rhyming, upper/lowercase letter/sound
identification
Writer's Workshop: we have been
working on coming up with ideas of 'what more can we add' to a piece that will
help the reader visualize what we have been trying to teach them about even
more; we also have begun working on our narrative writing - as we read stories
we pretend to be one of the characters in the story and we discuss/draw/write things
that have happened in their lives - this is a precursor to writing about things
that have happened in our own lives and how we feel about it.
Yesterday there was a great deal of excitement when we carved our pumpkin! It fit in perfectly
with our Science Properties unit and a discussion of the different attributes
of the pumpkin! Along with many 'ooooo's and 'yuck's', the children had to
describe how the pumpkin felt, both inside and out, and how the meat, pulp, and
seeds smelled. Each child then created a diagram of the different parts
of a pumpkin. They had a good time touching the pulp - this is always
such a fun learning activity!
P.E.
class was so much fun this week! When the children arrived at the gymnasium they found
that the lights were dimmed down low and the gym had been transformed into
a Haunted
House!
There were many fun activities to do such as crawling through a maze,
jumping on small trampolines and large mats, and watching a mop that could
clean the floor itself!
Mrs. Palaygi, our school guidance counselor, came in today and spoke with the children about how to be a good friend. She also talked with them about our 'Buddy Bench', which is found out on our playground. Be sure to ask your child about the 'Buddy Bench'! Mrs. Palaygi will come in for the next few weeks to talk with us about feelings and to practice different social skills.
Stuffed animal day was a big hit today! The children are so proud to have already filled up our warm fuzzy jar to the second line. I am very proud of them too! We are now on our way to the third line!

Stuffed animal day was a big hit today! The children are so proud to have already filled up our warm fuzzy jar to the second line. I am very proud of them too! We are now on our way to the third line!
Conversation Starters:
- How did the pumpkin meat and pulp feel?
- What was your favorite part of the Haunted House in P.E. class?
- What did Mrs. Palaygi teach us to say if we would like to join in a game? (say 'hello', ask 'what are you doing?', and ask 'can I play?'
- What is the 'Buddy Bench' for? (If someone does not have anyone to play with they can go and sit on the Buddy Bench. When another child sees them sitting there they can go over to them and ask them to play with them.)
How You Can Help:
- Practice zippering with your child. Thank you!
- PLEASE - label your child's coat, hat, gloves/mittens, and boots!
- Read the 'Hello, Halloween' and 'Three Little Pumpkins' poems with your child. They are in their folder today.
- When your child returns from trick or treating, encourage them to sort their Halloween candy. Have them tell you why they put it in the group that they did (what common attribute did all of the candy in that group have?). Have them count it in different ways - by 1's, sort it into groups of 5 and count by 5's, sort it into groups of 10 and count by 10's.
- Do the November Monthly Activity Guide with your child each night. It will be in their folder on Tuesday.
- Please continue to practice your child's birthdate, phone #, and address with them. Many of the children do not know this information.
Looking Ahead:
- Letters reviewed next week: Walker Prusik
- Someone Special Reminder: Oo, Ollie Octopus; Gg, Gus Ghost
- Monday – October 31st – Halloween – please DO NOT send in costumes
- TONIGHT - SLINGERLAND'S MONSTER MASH! - 6:15 in the gymnasium
