November 10

We have had a busy week!  In the area of Language Arts/Writer's Workshop we have continued to stretch words - tapping out the number of sounds that we hear and then writing them; phonemic awareness; continued to review upper/lowercase letter recognition and sound correspondence/ we have continued working on 'true' stories - this week we wrote one about the steps that we do to get ready for lunch, adding more details in illustrations, labels, sentences, and even speech bubbles!

Math - we continued working on the #'s to 10; using 10's frames to make #'s by 'adding on'; shape review; tally marks - counting by 5's; correct # formation

Social Studies/Science - we continued discussing the 5 senses - this week we discussed the sense of touch (we created a hand with different textures on it), the sense of hearing (we shook canisters filled with different objects and tried to match the sounds), and the sense of taste (we created a spiderweb made of jello).  When the spiderweb dries we can use it to review all of our senses - we can see it, we can taste it (the jello),  we can touch it (the jello had a rough texture), we can hear it (when we rubbed our hand over the jello it made a scratching sound) and we can smell it (the jello crystals).

Trying out the sense of 'touch'.

Hearing!

Touch!

Sight!

It was an exciting day on Tuesday as we discussed the presidential election!  Each of the children cast their vote.  On Wednesday we discussed the results of the national election - it was quite an exciting time as you can imagine!

Today we attended a
Veteran's Day assembly with the entire school.  We learned what a veteran is and about the significance of this very important day.  We looked like a sea of red, white, and blue!  The assembly was very informative and the children enjoyed it very much.  We especially enjoyed listening to the siblings of the children in our class who presented the assembly and Josey's Dad, Mr. McCarthy, who told all of the students about his time in the military!

Conversation Starters:
  • How did some of the items feel that you glued on your 'hand' craft?
  • What senses did you use in creating the jello spider web?
  • What are some of the different animals that have been in the Little Red Hen stories that we have read?  (cat, dog, mouse, goose, pig, rat, duck)

How You Can Help:
  • Please continue practicing zippering and tying with your child.
  • Please continue to practice your child's birthdate, address, and phone # with them.
  • Read/sing the poem 'Five Senses' with your child that they brought home in their folder in today.  Talk about the 5 senses with your child!

Looking Ahead:
  • Letters reviewed next week - Vv, Vicky Valentine; Jj, Jolly Jam
  • Someone Special Reminder - Milo Meyer
  • American Education Day in our classroom - Thursday, November 17th (see sheet that came home last week for times)
  • Eat, Shoot, and Read - (Turkey Shoot and Book Fair) - Thursday, November 17th (Book Fair continues on Friday, November 18th as well)
