March has arrived, and being as unpredictable as the weather is,
each day is a discussion as to whether it is a 'lion' day or a 'lamb' day!
Spring is right around the corner already, hard to believe, isn't it?
It doesn't matter what the weather is like outside, we continue to work
very hard inside in our classroom!
Math is all about addition - addition sentences, sums,
'altogether', and 'in all' this week! We have been concentrating very
hard on this concept and what it means. We are working with manipulatives
to understand why we arrive at the answers that we do. The children are
having fun working with the math facts to 5 - many of them tell me that they
are practicing them at home as well. Thank you! Throughout it all
we continue to review counting to 100 by 1's, 5's, and 10's; tally marks; ordinals; correct #
formation; addition/subtraction facts to 5; and #'s before, after, and in
between.
In Writer's Workshop we are writing everyday about things that 'we know about'. I
am continually amazed at what a great job the children are doing spelling sight
words, sounding out other words, and remembering to use many of the writing
conventions that we have been discussing. We will soon be writing 'how-to'
pieces on topics that the children know a lot about.
Thing 2 read us the book The Cat in the Hat - a favorite of ours! |
Our class with Mrs. Raffe's 2nd grade class! |
Has your child told you about our traveling bear, Jack? He was a guest of ours for a few weeks right before vacation. Unfortunately, when we arrived to school on Monday we found out that he had left us. He left a note saying that since we were going to be discussing community helpers this week he wanted
to go and visit some himself. Each day he has sent us a letter and photos
of the different community helpers and places that he has visited. The
children are getting a kick out of this and are on the lookout for him when
they are out and about in our community! Be sure to ask your child some
of the places and helpers that he has visited. On another note, be sure
to practice your child's address with them so that they can put their car up on
our community map. We continue to practice in school as well.
We discussed dental health all of this week.
We began by discussing healthy eating and what foods are good for us.
We then went into good dental health, why our teeth are important, and
ways in which to keep them healthy. Today Dr. McGarry, a dentist, came and
spoke to all of the kindergarteners about dental health. He even brought
us dental health goody bags! In your child's folder today there is a toothbrushing chart that your
child can fill out each day as he/she brushes their teeth. They can
return it on the date that is written on it (be sure they put their name on
it!) and receive a prize. I suggest that they hang it up right where they
brush their teeth so that they remember to fill it in.
Conversation Starters:
- What is a neighborhood or community?
- Where are some of the places that Jack has visited? (Bethlehem Public Library, I Love Books, Bethlehem Police Station, the fire house, the post office, the town park, Delmar Animal Hospital, the Bethlehem School Bus Garage)
- What is your favorite Dr. Seuss book?
How You Can Help:
- Continue to help your child with their Homework Journal and Fluency page each week.
- Practice your child's address with them.
- Practice sight words and math facts to 5 with your child.
- Have fun doing the 'Healthy Eating Chart' sheet with your child that is in their folder today.
- Help your child to fill out their toothbrushing chart each day. It is in their folder today.
Looking Ahead:
- Book order due - Thursday, March 9th
- Bookworm deadline - Tuesday, March 14th
