March 10

We have had some Lion days and some Lamb days so far in March but no matter the weather outside, we are concentrating and working very hard inside!

Math continues to see us practicing the concept of addition.  We are reviewing the vocabulary 'plus, equal to, sum, in all, and altogether'.  We have been practicing 'counting on' in our head to figure out the answer to the problem in front of us.  For instance, 'what is 2 more than 8'? The child says '8' in their head and then counts 2 more numbers.  Remember all of the practice that we did on this skill earlier in the year?  Now we are using the strategy!  This is a fun concept to practice at home!  We have also been doing brain teasers using pattern blocks.  The children definitely have to use their brains to problem solve these puzzles, using only the pattern blocks suggested and fitting them all into a specified space.  The children LOVE doing these!

The children are doing an awesome job in Writer's Workshop!  We continue to work on writing about things that we 'know a lot about'.  Most of the children are now remembering to use most of the writing conventions while they are doing their work, however the period at the end of the sentence still alludes many of them!  We have been sharing our stories with each other to see if they are clear and can be understood.  They especially like doing this!

The children are really doing a very nice job on their Homework Journals.  It is great reinforcement for everything that we practice in class with both reading comprehension and writing strategies.  Thank you so much for your help and support with this endeavor - they would certainly not be as successful as they are without your help and encouragement!  Since we finished reading Where the Mountain Meets the Moon this week, next week we will return to doing a book of their choice for the journals.

On Wednesday we went to the 5th grade play, 'Maria's River'. There was  much anticipation from the students in our class because many of them knew someone who was performing!  The children watched in awe as each act came and went.  Several of the children said that they are going back to see it again with their parents.  You will enjoy is very much - Mr. Betor and the 5th grade class have done a fantastic job!

Conversation Starters:

  • Where did you park your car on our community map?
  • Who are some of the community helpers that Jack, our traveling bear, visited this week?  (post office, town park, Bethlehem bus garage)

How You Can Help:

  • Encourage your child to practice writing their first and last name (first letter uppercase and all the rest lowercase).
  • Remind your child to fill in their toothbrushing chart.

Looking Ahead:
  • Bookworm entries deadline - Tuesday, March 14th
  • Thursday, March 23rd - Pete the Cat field trip
