February 10

FINALLY - A GOOD SNOW STORM!!!!!!!! The children were so excited when they arrived at school this morning!  Since it was very cold today they stayed inside for recess, but I hope that they all have the opportunity to play outside over the weekend! Because of our snow day the 100th day of school now falls on Wednesday, February 15th.  Next week will be a week full of celebration with Valentine's Day  on Tuesday and the 100th day of school on Wednesday!!!!!

We have been extremely busy in our class as we lead up to our February break (it is hard to believe that it is only a week away!)!  In Writer's Workshop this week we have been reading different stories and writing about them.  While doing this we have been honing our writing skills by trying to use the writing conventions that we have been focusing on in our Narrative unit.  The writing that the children are producing is awesome!  We began our Informational Writing unit on Wednesday.  We have been looking at many 'How-To' books - how they are written, what they are about and what we need to include when we write them.  The children are very excited and have already begun thinking about things that they know 'how-to' do!

This week in Math we have been reviewing different # patterns when we count to 100. We have also continued to focus on teen #'s and twenty #'s - how many bundles of tens and how many ones make up each #.  We are beginning to work on the concept of addition, or 'joining' as our math series calls it.  We have also been practicing the the # facts to 5 and soon we will practice the concept of why it is happening.

We spent time this week getting ready for Valentine's Day.  Not only did we do so by making several different crafts out of paper hearts, we also began learning about our real heart that keeps us alive!  We will continue this discussion this week.

Since Sunday is Abe Lincoln's birthday today we discussed  his presidency and accomplishments.  The children were very interested in learning about him.  We will continue this discussion along with George Washington next week since Washington's birthday is over our break.

We got together with our 3rd grade buddies today and made goldfish to go along with the book When The Mountain Meets The Moon.  The project involved quite a bit of paper folding and cutting but by working together the children did a great job!

Thank you to Milo's dad for being our Mystery Reader this week!

Conversation Starters:
  • Who was Abe Lincoln?
  • What did he keep in his hat?  (many of his important papers)

How You Can Help:
  • Continue to read with your child.  Research has found that in order for a child to internalize a word, they need to see it and/or hear it at least 7 times!
  • Continue practicing tying!  They are getting it - slowly, but surely!
  • Continue practicing addresses (almost everyone knows their's by now!) and phone #'s.
  • Please help your child to count out 100 items and bring them in on Monday in the plastic baggie that was sent home last week.

Looking Ahead:
  • Someone Special Reminder - Everyone has had a turn now!
  • Tuesday, February 14 - Valentine's Day:  The children will start opening their Valentine cards a little after 2:15.  Anyone is welcome to stop in during that time if you would like to!
