February 3

Congratulations to our Science Fair participants!

Welcome February!  It is hard to believe that it is here already!  WOW!

This week in
Math we have continued to review the teen #'s.  The children are doing a fantastic job showing what a teen # is by using unifix cubes and 'trains' of 10 and ones.  We also have been focusing on counting backwards from 20 to 0, which is a bit more of a challenge for some of them. We will continue to focus on this as well as counting on from a # other than zero, tally marks, reading graphs, and using the vocabulary more, less and equal.

Yesterday we celebrated the end of our narrative 'true story' unit.  The children sat 'shoulder to shoulder' and read each other their stories.  We then had a 'toast' with apple juice to celebrate our accomplishments!  Enjoy reading through your child's narrative papers when they come home next week.
Cheers!

We will begin our Informational Writing unit on Monday.  We will look at many 'How-To' books - how they are written, what they are about and what we need to include when we write them.  The children are very excited and have already begun thinking about things that they know 'how-to' do!  Enjoy looking at the pictures at the end of this blog, the children always have such a wonderful time reading to each other!

On Thursday we had a fun time learning about Groundhog Day!  We reviewed the concept of measurement by using a piece of string that was the same length as an actual groundhog to measure things in our classroom.  The children were excited to take the 'groundhog' home and measure things at home, as well as their parents!  We made a groundhog puppet, learned a groundhog poem, and learned some facts about groundhogs.  The children are always fascinated to learn about different animals.

We are enjoying discussing our One School, One Book  Where The Mountain Meets The Moon.  It is wonderful to see so many of the children participating in reading the book.  We will continue to discuss and do some fun activities related to the story as it progresses.   In the Spring Grace Lin, the author, will be visiting our school, which the children are very excited about!

Conversation Starters:
  • What is another name for a groundhog?  (whistle pig or woodchuck)
  • What do groundhogs do when they are scared?  (let out a shrill whistle)
  • Why do groundhogs have claws?  (they use them to dig their tunnels and burrows)

How You Can Help:
  • Continue to practice your child's address with them.  After break we will be putting a map up in our classroom and in order to get their car up on the it they must know their address.
  • Help your child to find an item that they can count 100 of.  Encourage them to put the items in groups of 10 as they are counting and then count by 10's.

Looking Ahead:
  • Someone Special Reminder:  Macie Mooney
  • 100th day bag of 100 items due Monday, February 13th.
  • A list of the children's names will be homing home as soon as I get it back from central copy to use if your child is planning on bringing in Valentine's Day cards.
