Welcome October and the wonderful sea of color that comes with it! It was awesome to see so many members of our class Wednesday morning enjoying the beautiful day on our 'Walk to School' day! Great exercise and lots of fun! Although we only had 4 days of school this week, we have been very busy!
Math - we concentrated on positional words - above, below,
right, left etc., shapes, translating patterns, # recognition, 1:1
correspondence while counting, # awareness - before, after, in between, 1or 2
more and 1or 2 less. This last concept is one that is a bit difficult for
the children to grasp - we will be using many different types of
manipulatives to practice. It is a concept that we will be review often!
Language Arts - we continued reviewing upper/lowercase letters; phonemic awareness - beginning sounds, rhyming; we began working in our
literacy/math stations - we are only up to 4 at this time but by the time we
have all of our stations going we will be up to 10!
Writer's Workshop - we are in the mist of creating beautiful, detailed pictures of
things that we 'know about'. This week we all created booklets as a class
on the topic of the playground. We learned how to 'visualize' what it is that
we want to draw (if anyone walked by during this activity they would have
thought that we were taking a catnap since we were 'visualizing' with our eyes
closed!) We also have begun streeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeetching words
to hear what sounds are in them and trying to write down the letters for the
different sounds that we are hearing. We have really been concentrating
on getting the correct beginning sound written down. A few of the
children are able to write down more of the sounds - every child is different!
I love to watch the children as they realize that they are becoming
writers!
Today we had a bus safety assembly. Many of the Bethlehem bus drivers came and discussed the different rules that we had learned about the first week of school. It was great review for the children. I was very proud of them and how quickly they raised their hands when asked questions!

Buster the Bus and several bus drivers did a wonderful job reviewing the bus rules with the students! |
The children have been bringing in some
wonderful signs of Fall! We learned all about squirrels this week when we made
Sammy Squirrel, who also taught us about how to stay healthy. We made a
squirrel that had a poem on it that said "If you have to sneeze, use a
tissue please!" I always like to do this unit of our health
curriculum at this time of the year so that we hopefully can avoid having too
many germs floating around our classroom!
Today we discussed Christopher Columbus and created a craft to go along with our discussion. Be sure to ask your child about this!
Conversation Starters:
Today we discussed Christopher Columbus and created a craft to go along with our discussion. Be sure to ask your child about this!
Conversation Starters:
- How do squirrels open nuts? (with their teeth)
- How do squirrels keep warm? (their tails serve as a blanket)
- What is the correct way to sneeze? (into the crook of your arm)
How You Can Help:
- Go to the Public Library and have your child get their own library card if they do not already have one. Take out some books with rhyming patterns in them.
- Continue to practice birthdates, addresses, and phone #'s
Looking Ahead:
- Letters reviewed next week: Nn, Nancy's Nest; Ii, Itchy Igloo
- Someone Special Reminder: Hailey Barbato
- Monday, October 10 - No School - Columbus Day
- Wednesday, October 12 - No School - Yom Kippur
- Scholastic Book order due - Thursday, October 13th
