October 14

We had a three day week this week but we were busier than ever!

Math - we continued to concentrate on positional words - above, below, right, left etc., shapes, translating patterns, # recognition, 1:1 correspondence while counting, # awareness - before, after, in between, 1 or 2 more and 1 or 2 less.  As mentioned in an earlier blog, this last concept is one that is quite difficult for the children to grasp - we have been using many different types of manipulatives to practice.  It is a concept that we will be review often throughout the year.

Language Arts - # of beats in a word, rhyming patterns, beginning sounds (and in many instances middle and ending sounds) are what we continually concentrate on in this area.  We have been working on some great stations during our station time.  Some of them are geared towards literacy, some toward math skills, and others toward cooperation with others.  See the pictures below!

Practicing 1:1 correspondence and counting while strengthening our muscles!

Practicing rhyming, which we are getting really good at!

Doing puzzles together - problem solving as well as cooperation.

Practicing letter formation.
Writer's Workshop - we began working on a booklet about our classroom.  The children were very careful to add as many details as they could and then when they thought that they might be finished, they went back and added even more!  Each day as we read one of the many books that the children enjoy so much, we look at the illustrations and try to find as many details as possible.  We were very careful to only add details that were on the topic that the booklet was about.  Believe it or not, this is quite difficult for many kindergarteners to do!  We continue to discuss that each picture alone can tell a story and that the words only add to it.  In Writer's Workshop we are transferring what we learn in our read-a-louds to our writing pieces!  We also continued to streeeeetch words and labeled the pictures that were on each page of our booklet.

We have had such a busy week learning all about fire safety!  It has been a lot of fun!
The Slingerlands Fire Department came to review fire safety rules with the children today.  Be sure to ask your child about the fire fighter who got dressed up in their gear!  We were able to go out to see the fire trucks and we were even able to sit in them!  The children LOVED it!  We also had fun making dalmatian hats to wear!

Conversation Starters:
  •  Have your child demonstrate 'Stop, Drop, and Roll'.
  • What should your do to your face when you 'Stop, Drop, and Roll.  Demonstrate this!
  • Have your child tell you 3 things that they learned about fire safety.

How You Can Help:
  •  Practice a family fire drill and discuss your family meeting place.
  • Show your child where the smoke alarms are located in your home.  Ask your child to count how many there are.
  •  Go over the fire safety papers with your child that are in his/her folder.
  • Continue to practice your child's birthdate, address, and phone # with them.

Looking Ahead:
  • Letters reviewed next week:  Ff - Fay Fish;  Bb - Bobby Bear
  • Someone Special Reminder: Nicholas Coscio-Thiel
