September 16

We are off to an awesome start to our school year!  The children are doing a super job of following the routine for each day!  Read on to see what we have been doing!

In the area of Math we have begun focusing on patterning (ABAB), calendar math activities such as tally marks, graphing the weather each day - recognizing more, less, and equal, shapes, and positional words.  We have also been working on sorting objects to 1 and 2 attributes.

We were sorting buttons by color, size, # of holes, any way that we could think of! The children worked very hard at this!

We began discussing bus safety the first week of school and finished discussing it this week. We completed a 'Chris C. Curious' booklet which the children brought home last week.  The booklet helped to remind the children of the different bus rules that they need to follow each day.  Each child also completed an individual page for a class bus safety book.  Each child will bring the book home to read with their family and 'teach' the rules.  Have fun!

After finishing bus safety we began discussing apples.  We will continue on with this theme into next week as well as discussing Fall.  It is hard to believe that Fall is almost here!  This week we made apples with patterned worms to hang in our classroom, we laced and decorated apples, completed an apple sequencing paper and an apple puzzle.  All of these projects are helping to reinforce listening, as well as sequencing to do each project in the correct step order.  We are also getting a lot of practice cutting, which in turn is strengthening our fine motor muscles.

We have been doing different things to strengthen our muscles and core to help us improve our writing and cutting.  We have been using playdoh a great deal, doing spider push-up's, table push-up's and different yoga exercises. Be sure to ask your child about this!

Table push-up's!

Each week as we review letters the children are encouraged to bring in something for our letter basket that begins with the letters that we are reviewing that week.  This week we reviewed the letters M, Munchy Monster and A, Annie and Apple, next week it will be S and D.   We also started creating our non-fiction journals this week. Each time we review a letter we will read non-fiction books about a topic that starts with that letter/sound. This week we read about monkeys and apples and completed a page for each.  We will keep these reading journals in our reading baskets and will be able to read them during our independent reading time.

It was wonderful to see so many of you at our Open House last night!  I hope that you found it informative.  Please remember that if, at any time, you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Conversation Starters:
  • What are the children expected to do upon arrival?  (give Mrs. Reddy their red folder, put their lunchbox in their cubby, put their pencil box under their seat, do the activity at their seat)
  • Ask your child to tell you a bus safety rule.  (feet/legs out of the aisle; hold onto the handrail when getting on/off the bus; do not push while waiting for the bus or when getting on, etc.)
  • Where do apple trees grow?  (in an apple orchard)
  • What appears on the apple tree before the apple grows?  (a blossom)
How You Can Help:
  • As mentioned earlier, we have begun reviewing the letters of the alphabet this week.  Help your child find an object for whatever letters we are reviewing to bring in for our letter basket. (In the future, they can also bring in something for any past letter that we have reviewed.)
  •  We have several class books that are circulating - 2 bus safety books and our family book.  Please read these with your child when they bring them home and then return them the next day.  The children are so proud of their work!
  • Dumbo, our class mascot, started going home this week with the children.  When your child brings him home, be sure to complete the journal and return him and his bag the next day! Have fun!
  • Please practice your child's bus route # with him/her.  Thank you!
Looking Ahead:
  • Letters reviewed next week:  Ss, Suzie Snake;  Dd, Dilly Duck
