May 26

We began the week by going to the Spring Concert!  The children did a great job - it was quite long! They loved seeing friends and family and thought that the songs performed by the band, orchestra and choir were great!

This week in math we have been reviewing the basic shapes as well as learning about solid shapes, such as cones, spheres, cylinders, and cubes.  We have continued our work on composing and decomposing numbers, as well as addition and subtraction facts to 5, tally marks, money and counting to 100 in a variety of ways.  We are certainly busy!!!!!

We are having so much fun in Writer's Workshop!  One day earlier this week found us reading the story Click, Clack, Moo, Cows That Type by Doreen Cronin.  We then wrote a letter to the cafeteria telling them about some changes that we would like, such as having ice cream for kindergarteners.  To go along with the story I Wanna a New Room, next week we will be writing letters to our parents requesting some sort of change in our own bedroom. You will be receiving these letters at some point so be prepared!

The ABC countdown has been wonderful!  The children really enjoyed 'experiment' day! We cleaned pennies with lemon juice and successfully stepped through an index card!

Everyone had the opportunity to 'step' through an index card!  It was cut a special way so that we could do so!

We also have been doing an experiment with one of our plants.  We planted it in dirt but have not given it any water or sunlight.  We check it daily to see if there are any changes.  Be sure to ask your child about this!

Funky fashion day and Hat day were also a huge hit!

Funky fashion day!

Hat day!

We began discussing
ponds this week.  We will continue on with this topic for the next couple of weeks, while also continuing to discuss insects and pond life with an emphasis on frogs.  We have really enjoyed learning about beavers!

Conversation Starters:
  • What are some creatures that live at or in a pond?  (frog, toad, turtle, beaver, water strider, snakes, ducks, etc.)
  • How does a beaver 'cut' down trees?  (They gnaw them with their teeth!)
  • How does a beaver get into its lodge?  (They have underground tunnels that go up into the lodge.)
  • What does a beaver do to tell other beavers that danger is near by?  (slaps its tail on the the ground or water)
  • Is our plant growing that we conducting an experiment on?  Why or why not?  (No, because we have not given it any sunlight or water which it needs to grow.)

How You Can Help:
  •  Practice tying shoelaces!
  • Practice sight words and addition and subtraction facts.
  •  On Tuesday your child will be bringing their lines home to learn for our play.  Please practice them nightly with them.  Thank you!

Looking Ahead:
  • Monday, May 29 - No School , Memorial Day
