December 23

Have you seen any Gingerbread Men running around?  We have read many books on these little fellows this week - and we love it!

In
Math this week we were introduced to non-standard measurement.  We measured gingerbread men using unifix cubes.  The children had to lace their g'man and then measure different parts of it.  They had a fun time doing this!  We also worked on # order as well as learning about teen numbers.  We will begin composing and decomposing them after our break.  It would be great if the children continued to practice writing their numbers - to 10, 20 or as far as they can go!  While do this please encourage them to form their #'s correctly, always 'starting at the top'!

In our
Writer's Workshop we have been working on saying in our head what it is that we want to write.  As we wrote our words/sentences this week, we practiced stopping every so often, reading back what we had written, and then saying the complete thought before beginning again.  I continue to amazed at the quality and quantity of writing that many of the children are producing! Many of them are getting very good at putting their thoughts down on paper, adding conventions of writing, and even adding such things as speech bubbles!  Once we are finished with our Narrative unit at the end of January all of their papers will be sent home for you to see.

We had a great deal of fun reading many different
gingerbread stories this week! Most of the gingerbread characters were boys, but one of our favorite stories was called The Gingerbread Girl.  Be sure to ask your child how she outfoxed the fox! We compared and contrasted stories, wrote about them, and chanted the different chants that each of the gingerbread characters said.  We also created our own gingerbread house and wrote about what we might find in it.  At our sensory station the children had gingerbread playdoh to use, which they loved!  The children enjoyed doing all of the activities that we did this week to go along with this theme!

Thank you to all who sent in goodies for our holiday snack time today - everything was yummy!  We had fun at the end of the day today as well as we joined the rest of the school for a Sing-a-long.  It was a terrific way to begin our vacation!

The children made awesome gifts for their parents for the holidays.  If you did not receive something, please be sure to ask for it!
Conversation Starters:
  • Are the gingerbread man stories fiction or non-fiction?
  • What gingerbread story is your favorite?

How You Can Help:
  • Please have your child practice putting their shoes and sneakers on and practice tying the laces.  This helps a great deal when they wear boots and change into their shoes/sneakers.
  • Continue reading with your child every night.  Go to the public library and help your child to get their own library card if they do not have one already.
  • THANK YOU TO ALL WHO CONTRIBUTED TO OUR MANY CAUSES THIS HOLIDAY SEASON!  IT IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!

Looking Ahead:
  • Someone Special Reminder:   Emmy Lobban
  • January 9 - Pete the Cat show - $7.50 due

HAVE A SAFE AND RELAXING HOLIDAY!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
