WOW - the weather sure has changed, hasn't it? Hopefully the children are all getting outside to run, ride bikes, play games and enjoy it!
A HUGE THANK YOU for the wonderful booklet that your children made for both me and Mrs. Clarke! It is certainly a treasure that we will always keep!
We have continued working on our persuasion techniques in Writer's Workshop. This week we
focused on stating a problem, giving reasons why it is a problem, and using
polite language, such as saying 'please'. All the while we continue to
practice using the conventions of writing that we have been working on all year
long.
In Math this week, along with calendar math, we reviewed number facts, addition and subtraction facts and worked in our decomposing booklets. The children are very good at coming up with 'stories' about their math facts!
The children are having a great time with our ABC Countdown! It is so much fun
to see them arrive each day talking with each other about it! Backwards Day was a huge hit! Thank you
for your support with this, as well as everything else that you do for your
child!
Slingerlands Field Day is on Monday, June 19th. Your child
brought home an order form for a field day tee shirt earlier this week.
Kindergarten is supposed to wear a red shirt that day. You can
order a field day shirt for your child if you would like, but they can just
wear a shirt that they already own that is red also. Not everyone buys
one, so do whatever you please!
We learned about insects this week. We
created our own insect, making sure that it had the correct # of body parts,
the placement of the legs were correct, etc. We learned a fun song about the
insect's body parts. Ask your child to sing it for you! We also read a fun booklet called 'Look on a Leaf' and created colorful butterflies for our windows.
Conversation Starters:
- How many parts are there to an insect? (3)
- What are the body parts called? (head, thorax, abdomen)
- How many legs does an insect have? (6)
- On what body part are the legs and wings located? (thorax)
- Is a spider an insect? (no, it has 8 legs)
- Are insects cold-blooded? (yes)
How You Can Help:
- Continue to encourage your child to practice counting by 1's, 2's, 5's, and 10's to 100.
- Continue to encourage your child to practice their addition and subtraction facts to 5.
- Encourage your child to practice a different fluency page in their back of their homework journal every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday when the journals are home.
- Encourage your child to write their full name, first and last, using uppercase letters only for the beginning letters of each name and lowercase for all of the rest.
- Encourage your child to practice writing the ABC's, both upper and lowercase.
Looking Ahead:
- Monday, May 22 - Field Day shirt order form due if your child is purchasing a shirt (no orders will be taken after this date)
- Monday, May 29 - No School, Memorial Day
- Thursday, June 15 - Kindergarten ABC Play - 2PM
- Monday - June 19 - Slingerlands Field Day
