May 12

We have had a great week!  Even though it has been a bit cloudy we have a lot of energy in our classroom!  We participated in Healthy Steps by walking or running around the field outside by the playground several times this week.  The entire school participated which was a lot of fun!

Mrs. Clarke and I were greeted on Monday with a beautiful arrangement of flowers for each of us! We have enjoyed them all week long!  Thank you so much for your thoughtfulness as well as sharing your wonderful children with us day after day!

In math we finished our chapter on composing and decomposing numbers. This is a concept that we will continue to focus on for the remainder of the year.  The children are becoming experts on making #'s using different number sentences.  It is amazing how quickly they can give me an answer!  We also continue to review our calendar math as well as addition and subtraction.

We are having a lot of fun in Writer's Workshop!  To begin our unit on persuasion we came up with a list of problems that sometimes happen in our classroom and school.  Some of the ideas that we came up with were talking in the halls, leaving the tops off of the markers and glue sticks, and not listening when others are speaking.  Each child chose one of the problems and created a poster about it.  One day we worked on stating the problem and illustrating it.  The next day they stated what happened due to the problem and how to solve it.  They completed the project by illustrating this as well.  We found out that in order to make things happen for the better we need to give reasons why things should be changed.  Watch out, your child may try to persuade you to change something at home!

We made wonderful Mother's Day gifts for our Mom's this week.  The children were supposed to hide them until Sunday, so if you do not receive a gift on Sunday, please be sure to ask your child about it!  Thank you to all of you for the wonderful support that you give each and every one of them!  I hope that you have a restful, enjoyable day!

We continued discussing seeds and plants this week.   On Wednesday we planted seeds, both bean and marigold, and have been watering them each day.  It has been very hard to just give a little water to each plant and not a shower!!!!    The moment the children arrive each day they go directly to their plant to see if it has sprouted yet!  Nothing yet - but soon, I keep telling them!

Thank you to Walker's mom for being our Mystery Reader today!

Conversation Starters:

  • Ask your child how we did the healthy steps outside.  (We ran or walked a lap around the orange cones.  When a lap was completed we put a popsicle stick in the bucket.)
  • What country is the school 'walking across' with the healthy steps?  (The United States.  Each day the P.E. teachers count how many popsicle sticks are in the bucket at the end of the day and from that they compute how many miles the school has walked that day.  It is a fun project!)
How You Can Help:
  • Continue practicing tying laces!
  • Continue practicing sight words and math facts.

Looking Ahead:
  • Tuesday, May 16th - Kindergarten ABC Countdown begins (see the letter in your child's folder today)
  • Thursday, June 15th - 2 PM - Kindergarten ABC play - all are invited!  More info to come later!  (All of the Kindergarten classes participate in this play!)
