December 2

We returned on Monday with wonderful memories of delicious turkey, stuffing and time spent with our families!  Now it is December already - yikes!

In the area of math we continue to review many of the concepts that we have been working on - calendar math, tally marks, 1:1 correspondence, correct number formation, counting by 1's, 5's, and 10's, '1 and 2 more than' and '1 and 2 less than'.

We have continued to  be very busy in the are of Language Arts as well!  This week in our
Writing Workshop we have been learning about 'What makes good writing easy to read'.  We discussed the fact that the more letters we put in our words, not writing strings of letters, using finger spaces, and adding more pictures with details are a great way to help a reader.  We are working on our Narrative unit and know that in order to write a good narrative we need to tell about one true event that happened to us, give some details about that event (who, what happened, where), and how we felt about it.  We will continue to work on this unit thru January.

We
created wonderful snow people to hang in our classroom this week.  We also made our December calendar.  We enjoyed reading and discussing fairy tales this week.  We read many different versions of The Three Billy Goats Gruff.  The Three Billy Goats Fluff was a favorite of ours! was one of our favorites!  We will continue to read different fairy tales throughout the year.

We have been reading fairy tales all week.  The children are enjoying them very much!  There are so many of them that we will continue to read more next week and throughout the rest of the year.

Thank you to Josey's Grandmother for being our Mystery Reader this week!

We have some future architects in our class!  These boys are designing a zoo!  It is terrific!

Conversation Starters:
  • Would you like the Troll in the story The Three Billy Goats Gruff as a friend?  Why or why not?
  • Why was the troll finally able to get to sleep in the story The Three Billy Goats Fluff?  (Mother Goat made each of the Three Billy Goat's fluffy booties.)
  • Did the sky really fall on Henny Penny's head?  (no, an acorn fell on it!)
  • What did Peter Rabbit lose in the garden?  (his new blue jacket and his red shoes)

How You Can Help:
  • Continue reading fairy tales with your child at home - they love them!
  • Continue practicing your child's address and phone # with them.  This is very important!  Many of the children are learning them, but there are a few who do not know them at all.
  • Thank you for your help with the Homework Journals.  The children did a great job on them this week!

Looking Ahead:
  • Someone Special Reminder - Josey McCarthy
  • Letters reviewed next week - Ww, Willy Whale; Xx, Crazy Mixed-Up X
  • BCSD Holiday Food Drive  - goes thru December 8th - K classes are collecting cereal, brownie mix, cookie mix, and cake mix, thank you to all who have sent things in already!

Holiday Drop and Shop - Friday, December 9th - a great way to get your shopping completed!
